Informations

Information with spatial reference helps to facilitate, simplify and optimise a wide range of decisions and processes in almost all areas of our modern social lives. Access to this Geoinformation, whether by public officials, businesses and researchers or private citizens, is becoming increasingly important. Digital spatial data has now become an important part of the modern information society and constitutes an important factor for the economy.

Spatial data is now available in many digital formats. Knowledge of location, scope and currency in relation to this data is often lacking, however. While the creation of new spatial data has attracted plenty of investment over the years, long-term usage has often been neglected. In recent years, however, the interdisciplinary and multifunctional use of spatial data has become much more relevant. Spatial data originally collected for one purpose should now be usable by as many users as possible, at whatever administrative level and in whichever capacity, and also for other applications. The solution here is to establish a highly capable spatial data infrastructure (SDI).

Another motivational factor here is the INSPIRE Directive, which promotes the construction of an EU-wide spatial data infrastructure.
