Description

Covering an area of just over 2,055 square kilometres, the transboundary Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park stretches from Hunsrück and the Saar-Nahe hills to the Schwarzwälder high forest and Saar-Moselgau, and down to the vineyards of the Upper Mosel and Saar-Niedgau in Saarland. Forming one of the most attractive low-mountain landscapes in Germany, a large number of nature reserves underline the conservational value of this region. In 2018, Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park achieved an extremely impressive second place in the 2018 public vote on ‘Germany’s Natural Wonders’, as conducted by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation.
In the section of the nature park located within Saarland, the meander in the Saar river near Mettlach through a gorge in the Taunus quartzite of the Hunsrück has become the iconic landmark of Saarland itself. This narrow meander is lined with escarpments and scree slopes up to 200 m high, created as the Saar has cut down deep into the bedrock below. These scarps, some no more than naked rock and precipices strewn with boulders, give way to unspoilt forest habitats. This Natura 2000 protected area of European significance is a refuge for many animal and plant species, some of which are relics of when this area was primeval forest.
